New Equipment Facilities to Enrich Our Study

Today there are few Chinese promoters who come to our campus to promote their products. They introduce themselves as "The PerkinElmer Precisely" but they said the word "precisely" have caused them trouble to explain to the public about what actually they are running in their business.

So in order to distinguish their business apart from others, they have set a new name for their company which is "The PerkinElmer Better". The word "better" describes how their product will bring more improvements in ones life's satisfaction as their products are leading in advancement of technology.

What I want to share with you guys, especially my fellow juniors, grab this opportunity to learn on how to use all of the facilities and take a good care of them for the sake of future batches. Why I say like this? Because you guys are very lucky to have these sort of technologies and the opportunity to use them optimally.

Lastly if you are interested in knowing further about this company or you want to find a practical training venue..maybe this following details are useful for you..best of luck..

MISC focused on youth development

Saturday February 23, 2008
By SHARIDAN M. ALI
sharidan@thestar.com.my

Its corporate responsibility programmes propel long-term growth

FOR MISC Bhd, the world's single largest owner-operator of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers, the concept of corporate responsibility (CR) goes beyond philanthropy and public relations.

The shipping giant's CR programmes propel quantitative and qualitative long-term growth that benefits the group, shareholders as well as stakeholders.

Its CR programmes also support Malaysia's bid to become a prominent maritime nation.

Dealing with the complex and advanced LNG and other types of energy transportation, MISC has long anticipated the present shortage of skilled seafarers.

It has been working on and investing in various educational and training programmes for youths.

It is speculated the global shortfall in shipping manpower has doubled to 20,000 in the last two years.

Group corporate affairs general manager Fiona Clare Pereira told StarBiz that MISC CR-related programmes continued to focus on youth development this year.

“As Malaysia is envisioned to be a maritime nation, MISC is committed towards the provision of efficient human capital to support this vision, focusing on our very own Malaysian Maritime Academy (Alam).

“For the financial year ended March 2007, more than RM16mil was invested in our cadet sponsorship programme at Alam,” she said.

Today, she added that many of the sea captains in Malaysia's maritime-related industries were Alam graduates and MISC was proud to be the contributing factor behind their success.

“And many more graduates of calibre are already in the making.she said.

“Although they may not be on life-long employment with MISC, our CR towards fulfilling Malaysia's aspirations of becoming a maritime nation will always be at the forefront of our commitment,” she said, adding that this also ensured the availability of seafarers for MISC's growing fleet.

According to Pereira, its latest CR programme, “Navigate Your Career” is an effort to prepare university students to enter the real “working world”.

MISC wishes to prepare them to be more adaptive to the changes and progression of the job market,” she said, adding that the programme was launched last July in various universities across the nation.

She said the three-part programme, “Educate, Engage & Expose - Navigate Your Career”, was geared towards enhancing employment awareness via guidance initiatives imparting soft skills and insights into career development.

This CR programme is inclusive of road shows, an online resource centre and practical attachment.

About 3,000 undergraduates participated in this programme whilst eight students have just completed the student attachment pilot project.

“We believe our latest effort in social development will help create a more buoyant local graduate pool in the near future,” Pereira said.

Also last February, MISC and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UiTM) signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the establishment of Professorship Chair in marine technology at UiTM.

The chair is tasked with bridging the gap between what the academic institution is offering and the maritime industry’s needs for qualified personnel and technological advancement to meet the present and future challenges.

The establishment of the chair would further enhance research in maritime technology, which would benefit the maritime sector in Malaysia.

MISC and UiTM have also jointly established a Marine Technology Research and Development Database at UiTM.

The database focuses on marine technology research and development data throughout Malaysia.

In terms of health and safety in the workplace, MISC does not confine itself to a specific programme or scheme.

Its corporate health, safety and environment general manager Captain M.K. Ganesan said several programmes usually ran all year round.

“Promoting healthy lifestyle, safety and protecting the environment are some of the programmes that have been rolled out,” Capt Ganesan said.

“Onboard our vessels, we have an ongoing campaign - Zero Incident Zero Accident (ZIZA) - for our officers and crew to be vigilant at all times,” he added.

In the last financial year, 13 ships recorded their third year ZIZA safety performance; seven ships, their second year; and 13 ships passed their first year.

Capt Ganesan said another significant project launched in 2006 was the MISC fuel efficiency campaign.

“The fuel saving measures not only reduce consumption but also environmental pollution.

“Burning one or two extra tonnes of fuel oil on a voyage can have much effect on the overall fuel cost and environmental pollution.

“The cost becomes substantial when this is extrapolated within MISC's entire fleet,” he said.

To MISC, CR is not only about making a positive impact on society and the environment but also generating sustainable benefits to society as part of maintai ning a long-term competitive business.

What Do You Think About This English Proverb?

"A Calm Sea Never Made A Skillful Mariner"

Well..in my opinion, this proverb is really meaningful depending on the degree at which you look at it..In our life as the students of AS234 it addresses our actual path in our Marine Technology degree programme..yeah not just because it bears "mariner" word but because of the exact situation that we are having now..

Its simple meaning would be: A life without problems wont make us a matured person..
and people will ask...How matured is matured? Than my answer will be based on the words of Sir John C. Maxwell.."A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them and strong enough to correct them"..Wow wonderful isn't it?

So in our programme..We've so many things that seem unfamiliar with us..We have to learn so many disciplines
..SCUBA, swimming, engineering, programming, financing, management and so on..wow..but all of them are not as simple as a piece of cake..We've to take a deep breath to catch them up..They are all new to us and indeed to digest them all would require a serious concentration and focus..Speaking of concentration and focus..there will be many circumstances, obstacles and problems in the process for us to actually give them out wholly for the sake of our study..and indeed those are our real and deadly "tsunami" waves..why? You figure it out!

I would like to picture our degree programme as "A VERY GREAT SHIP LOADED WITH PRECIOUS CARGOES AND LEAD BY SKILLFUL MARINERS" which is on its way to
discharge the precious cargoes to right destination where the cargoes will be highly appreciated..voyaging across the ocean would be very exhausting..storms..big waves..hurricanes are all inevitable..the ship needs to reach the destination by hook or by crook..whatever comes into the path, that would be the challenge for the ship to face with..but when the ship has berthed safely and discharged all the cargoes..All the pains will just vanished in a glimpse when all of those cargoes it has brought along the hard journey are being praised and honoured.

So, those who cant cope with the "tsunami" will just be drifted away and those who "manage" to cope with it will stay on the ship..voyaging and seeing the true path of the "angry ocean" together..

Here, the proverb indirectly tells us that all the hardships that we have faced and will face in completing our study will actually benefit ourselves..molding ourselves to be more optimistic, hardworking, adherent and so forth..

Hence i feel that this proverb suits us..how about you?

Dinner 2009!! What would you want?

aha..here we go again..

Just to catch your attention..We would like to now about your ideas on the coming Marine Technology Dinner..which most probably will be held in Dewan Baru approximately on the beginning of March 2009..

So to make it "happening" and "more fun" event than previous ones..we're open and vulnerable to any suggestion from you regarding the following criteria:
  • Theme
  • Food
  • Emcees
  • Shows from each batch
  • Any fun games or activities that might cherish all the guests
So this blog is actually the core medium for us to know your ideas..the rule is easy..majority will reign and minority will have to understand..

So good luck!..That's all for this post..catch more soon..

Attention!! Batches Name!

Hi Guys..so now ive transferred the debate's idea in the "friendster" group here..

We've been thinking of naming each batch.. This would be a great move for us..Yeah..so we dont need to call each batch in regard with their respective semester..like part 2..part 3..bla..bla..

So this idea is great and for your confirmation..this will be implemented next semester..where we will stick the names on the board in front of Puan Norsila's room..just like the FSR but we got bigger board compared to Miss Khor's..haha

That is not the matter..the matter is, we need to find names for each batch..suitable, flexible, same root (optional) and have historic or aesthetic value would be the base of our findings..

so guys..milk ur brains up..for example: names of the Legendary Great Ship etc..any suggestion?

so..that's all for this..catch more soon..

SCUBA!!SCUBA!!SBACU!!PART 3!!

Well guys.. here my 3rd post of the same day..haha..boring indeed..

Puan Norsila said Part 2 students will go to Perhentian Island at 5-8 March 2009 for their certificate..so whoever wants to continue to Open Water License then that should be your date..

Of course the value of the license still remains..that is RM1100/= hehe..quite expensive rite..Next semester, only 11 students will be going for their certificate..so this is the time where we can have spaces to breathe after most of the time we've been in very congested situation..hahahahahaha..

So for those who are interested to get your license..get yourself registered..that's all..hehe..

ok..that's all for this..catch more soon..

Final Year Proposal? What the HECK??!!

Owh man..Do you all realize about this? Rumor of 11 students of PART 3 have started doing their proposal is very unbelievable..well it's still too early right? All of the students have tried to bind with Encik Jamil Tajam and as expected as much as 11 titles of proposal have been produced to them but with conditions applied..

Huhu..let us see the time planning (for part 3 la)..if we dont do now the proposal now..i mean the coming semester 4..we dont have time to do it later..after we've finished our 4th semester, we will be subjected to Industrial Training until July..after that, we will directly register and start our 5th semester..and by the end of semester 5, we need to present our proposal..where got time??

How we want to make a good proposal with so many trips and classes? huhu..how we want to make corrections in short time? well..these are what most of the students who have their work started said..

yeah..but if u look into this problem closely..they are correct..we dont have enough time actually..with tremendous burdens come from lectures, lecturers, assignments, trips and so forth..wow..I think we'd better get a lecturer to bind with..we really dont have enough time for sure..

For those who read this post..I hope that u will realize this matter..

ok..that's all for this post..catch more soon

After All The Hardships..Where Is Our SCUBA Certificate!!

Well..after promoting the scuba..Ive been wondering..What actually happens to our scuba certificate? Until now none of paper-like things have reached our hands right? Where are they? Hiding?

Arrgghh..the same situation was never experienced by previous Part 4 students..They got their certificates immediately..but we? Months..hopefully it wont turn into years..

We've paid them "on-time"..but we will get them "next-time"..How could this thing happen to us?

I believe non of us..the part 3 students have received the promised certificate right..!! we need to fight it guys..yeah..prepare all parangs, brooms and sumpits..we will attack right after the semester begins..

ok..that's all for this..catch more soon..

Semester Grand Meeting 09

Persatuan Teknologi Marin or Marine Technology Association will be holding a Semester Grand Meeting 09 that will be approximately held a week after the semester begins. This meeting would convey a lot of things that need to be informed, discuss and whatsoever therein.

This SGM would cover the activities that have been proposed by the MTs to the HEP, presentation of the association's financial record, activities to generate cash to our association, planning for the dinner in UiTM, taaruf session with new part 2 students, dicussion of the planning of "Program Induksi Pelajar Semester 1 09" and so on..

Well, as you can see the list above, there will be many activities, hopefully, and for that sake we urge for all of the members' co-operation, support and little sacrifices. Indeed, to make those things happen we need unity in diversity as what we've been told by Puan Norsila, we need to be a school of fish not a shoal of fish. That would be our identity.

The proposed activities are as follows:
  • 3 Days Journey with Marine Technology
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Seminar Kerjaya
  • Seminar Part 5
In 3 Days Journey with Marine Technology, we've included activities as follows:
  • Cabaran Debat Piala Ketua Program Teknologi Marin
  • Sukantara Samudera
  • Promosi Program AS234 kepada pelajar-pelajar Part 6 Diploma
So this 3 days would consume a lot of energy and we will discuss later on which Batch will manage each activity.

Seminar Kerjaya is another activitiy that has actually been proposed by Encik Jamil Tajam to actually support Part 6 students. We will find some related companies/agencies representative to come and give talk about the carrier that can be pursued in their respective company/agency..It would take a day and all batches are required to come. Compulsory!

The biggest thing that we need to focus on the next-next semester is the "Program Induksi Pelajar-pelajar Semester 1 2009"

Discussions have been held with Encik Jamil about this matter. We need to get prepared of all the things..ranging from sponsors, water-based activities, place of camping, the food, transport and all sort of things. We need to get ready! This event must be successfully done..

Ok..thats all for this..catch more soon
